Fiona McGuigan

FionaMcGuigan

Born in Bern (CH) of Scottish parents, trained at the de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam, Fiona McGuigan now resides in Seattle, WA, USA.

Her work explores repetition, memorization, and drawing without visual feedback as part of her painting process. Through tenaciously re-drawing her subject matter she memorizes the movements needed to create a shape; and then reproducing it from memory. Her work is about the experience of looking, translating these visual cues into movement and movement into mark making.

“While refining the image I seek accidents and the unexpected. A mark is only successful if its put down without hesitation, failure is part of the process. It’s the only way I can absorb the quality of the object, and move beyond representation towards a gestural construct of the form.”

Zürich Residency:
During her 2 month artist residency in Zürich she is exploring the industrial/urban landscape along the Limmat. She’s making detailed drawings of shapes she found unique to the city i.e. the new Kornhaus, cooling towers, lampposts, chimney vents, bridges etc. Her plan is to take these drawings, and design an alphabet of Zürich, by assigning one shape to each letter, thus creating a (pictorial) typeface. She will use this font to write out words/poems collected from Zürcher artists as well as a basis to create abstract paintings.
